One thing that we can all agree on is that we invariably love anything prepared by mom. It's said that the mother’s love is the best gift in the world and when that coats the food on the plate, it gives that distinctive taste that can never be matched. F Bistronome is celebrating mom’s recipe in their Bonne Maman Josette Dinner menu (¥688 for two) which will be over today.
The menu is prepared by Josette, a grandmother, and mother of two, who has come all the way from France, just to showcase French-style home cooking in Beijing. Her gleaming bright eyes reflect her passion for cooking. Always smiling, she reminded us of Julia Child in ways. She had started cooking at the early age of 13, and her style is inspired by her mother and her mother-in-law. She has immense experience as a fresh produce sourcer for Michelin-starred restaurants and collaborating with renowned chefs to supply them the best ingredients for their kitchen. Josette is in town just for two days, and the simple menu prepared by her includes three starters, two main courses and a good dose of sweetness to end.
All of them were delicious, but some were pure mother’s love- incomparable.
A stuffed squid served with homemade tomato sauce- a recipe from Josette’s aunt. The creamy stuffing of rice, egg, and calamari was so comforting and yummy that we could not stop until it was over. Both the main courses reminded us of home, be it the braised beef cheek served with vegetables (“don’t forget to finish off the veggies!”) or the sarsuela-a hearty broth infused with saffron, anis, onions, and plenty of seafood (prawns, scallops, cod, and mussels). Perfect for a cold winter night. Amongst the desserts, our favorite was the Maman’s Flan. The flaky pastry filled with custard and topped with caramel sauce was the perfect thing to end our dinner.
Nothing can compare mother’s recipes!
