When we heard about the latest Chaplin opening up in Shilipu we were excited to check out the bar and see what this “bigger and better” location is all about. We love the original Chaplin and the privacy that it offeres but the new one is a whole different story.
Starting off, this four-story Chaplin isn’t exactly a bar. Its first floor is like walking down the narrow corridor of an old-timey train compartment. Walk up a flight of narrow stairs and you’ll find yourself on a Charlie Chaplin-adorned floor that looks like a cross between a train compartment and a dressing room with narrow walkways and custom-designed small tables for two. Walk up another flight of these narrow stairs and you’re in a theater-like room that’s created to have the parties that would make Gatsby jealous. 1, 2, 3… Wait. We did say four stories. The basement isn’t a place you can hang out when you’re at Chaplin, but it’s a must see. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that Jack Sparrow would feel right at home there.
Their signature cocktails put a fun spin on some classics for ¥70 a glass or ¥350 for a travel bottle for the table to share. Take a Negroni Blanc or a Lucky Ocho. Both are good, stiff, and uniquely Chaplin.
Differentiating itself from its other locations, this Chaplin has a (pretty decent) food menu. The chef’s latest specials of seared scallops (¥70) are light and delicious. Their boeuf bourguignon (¥130) is rather tasty. Hearty, well seasoned, and oh-so-tender, making them a great pre-drinking choice for dinner.
While the food is decent, we couldn’t help but wish they had a bigger table. The small custom-designed train tables are beautiful and great for two people for a night of drinking; we had an interesting time trying to fit our plates, drinks, and phones all on the same surface.
