And with a new second floor, to boot!
You read right, folks. Not only is Destination's dance floor up-and-running, but the club has also added a whole second floor, complete with lounge areas and extra bars. Of course, the club's sleek new look comes with a price tag, as the old RMB60 cover charge is back in full force. (It does come with a free drink ticket, though). And leave your flip-flops at home: somewhat bizarrely, the management has banned them from August 1st onward.
To be honest, many of us–myself included–never quite believed that Destination's dance floor had been closed due to "renovations." As British expat David told me on Friday night, "We all thought some higher up didn't want to be embarrassed by a bunch of sweaty men dancing together, and so had asked them to close it. I'm really pleasantly surprised!"
So now that the new Destination is finally here, how does it stack up? While the club was still completely packed, the extra space did make the place feel a little less claustrophobic. Personally, I find some of the second-floor lounges inappropriately bright, but as one reveler told me, "Sometimes it's nice to actually be able to see the guy you're talking to." Most impressively, the renovations have managed to make Destination feel more elegant without losing any of its pleasantly laid-back atmosphere, flip-flop bans aside.
More importantly, what do you think? Leave a note in the comments section to let us know how you feel about Beijing's one-and-only primarily male gay club.
