Dr. Hedy Lee (李文), freelance celebrity consumer rights advocate loved and feared by all, went inside the new T3 before it opened on Feb. 29 and gave the Armchair Traveler an exclusive report on her experience. She concludes, “Out of 1- 10, I give overall hardware an 8, staff service 6, details 3, design 7.” So what were the major complaints? Details mainly. In her visit, the Qantas check-in counter was late in opening and there was confusion about which line to stand in. There were no English language customs forms available. Signage was confusing, hard to read and rife with grammatical errors. There were no trash cans to be seen. The new airport concourse train to the international terminal was bumpy and made too-sharp turns. There were lots of pretty girls wearing pageant banners standing around who didn’t know how to give info. Hedy was also disappointed by the Air China (and also the Star Alliance) first class lounge, noting that it used mostly domestic products in the bathrooms, was over perfumed and had three private rooms which looked like something you’d find in a KTV. She sums up: “It is overall a very pretty structure and uses a lot of natural light. And I must say it is the prettiest airport by far in China. But the Capital Airport is a doorway of China, so can our doorway pass the Olympic test in August? Can it pass its grand opening? Are we really ready to open our doorways? My answer: not really.” Agree/disagree?
