The last few days of Beijing Design Week are coming up, and if you haven't gone yet, there's still a lot worth seeing. We ducked out of the office for a few hours to see what's going on at Dashilar Hutong--right off of Qianmen--and found a lot to sift through.
Lost & Found
The store with a penchant for vintage Chinese goods put up an awesome display of old-style Chinese danwei furniture.
The skeleton display of a well-crafted chair
WUHAO@The Teahouse
Wuhao and Tranquil Tuesdays selected this beautifully dilapidated space for their pop-up shop.
You can have tea in one of these artsy spaces, but it's going to set you back RMB50 per cup.
Nice touch
ChART Home
First off, the TV dollhouse is adorable, Look closely--there's a fish tank with actual fish and a working TV on the wall. (TV within a TV? If only there was another TV in the TV too)
But we thought this was a cute idea. Basically, you take down a blank postcard from the wall and write a message to whoever you choose. Your postcard will be on display for others to see until October 3, when they will all be mailed out.
A Day in the Life of Ernesto Bones
Sort of like an empty haunted house with interactive displays. 24 creative types in London were invited to construct a story about one Ernesto Bones. They were given a photo of an object from Mr. Bones' life and the last two lines from a previous entry. We remember doing a school project like this one time ...
Skylight Cafe
A pop up cafe with food from Susu, coffee from Rickshaw Roasters and yummy desserts from Arrow Factory Bake Shop (we heartily recommend the pumpkin cheesecake), among others. You can go upstairs and enjoy open-air dining as the roof seems ripped away. It's so atmospheric that we're a little sad to hear it will all be destroyed after Design Week.
Downstairs are modern interpretations of traditional Chinese clothing by Triple Major. We were especially fascinated by the interesting collection of buxie.
And the most disgusting, greasy kitchen we've ever seen (this one, we hope, is not the one Skylight uses!)
Dawailangying Hutong
A big factory housing several intriguing displays--oh, and Topshop stuff. We're happy to report that the pop-up Topshop shop (say that one five times fast) still has plenty of goods left to purchase. But head upstairs for an unexpected treat: Silent Heroes: Objects. Zhou Xun's childhood things are on display while she explains their importance to her, and what memories they invite. Even if you're not a fan (WHAT?) it's hard not to be sucked into her childhood mind.
want to know what this chamber pot means to Zhou Xun?
She's not the only subject, as the exhibit also lets ordinary residents of Dashilar relate the memories and ideas behind a nearly meaningless object in their life.
It's probably supposed to make you re-think trash (it was someone's treasure once, natch), which ties in nicely with most of the environmental themes of this factory space, whether it's a HUTOPOLIS or a re-imagined 2nd Ring in 2049. And also, there's of course a pop up cafe, with Rickshaw Roasters making another welcome appearance.
