How would you introduce readers to your works?

What I do a lot of now involves city ruins. While it looks like my works are all related to the city, I’m not actually that concerned about urban development. My works are reflection of what my heart says. I want to express how given a space, a desolate environment, if you put a city and district there, it will attract millions of people to this tight space.

What is the significance of the image on this issue’s cover?

I suppose it’s my fear of cities and the development of cities ... [The image] I ended up using has remarkable colors, especially the paint. It’s also notable that half the picture is in light and half is in shadow.

What do you think Caochangdi’s future holds?

Most of Caochangdi will be demolished. Many of my friends’ living and working conditions will be affected. I’m sure it has an effect on them, to always be thinking about this. If they don’t demolish the area, this area will flourish.

What does the future hold for you?

I don’t really have a plan or an idea of what my work will be like. What I myself will be like, I don’t know. It can’t be controlled.

What do you want to study in the future?

I want my feelings to guide me to do something, to calmly and peacefully create a work of art that’s not triggered or impacted by politics and money. When I make something, it’s an experience. I wish to make the process personal, slow. To make art is to experience a process.
