Cable 8 Creative Center in the CBD is coming down in the worst way. The art district, housed in the last Mao-era factory in the CBD, is being torn down to make way for skyscrapers--and even pleas from a former French prime minister and the current French ambassador weren't enough to stay the government's hand.

The most shocking development in the ongoing dispute happened late last Thursday. Xiong Ying of Cable 8 says a 200-strong demolition "army" came without any notice and beat up 7 company employees and smashed buildings and cars. Four of the victims are still hospitalized. Here's a video of the sneak attack:

We don't know the entire nature of the dispute, but according to a Global Times article, the Cable 8 team and government representatives have had several difficult rounds of negotiations. With more that 160 different groups renting out of the old factory, it's almost certain not all found new homes, or even received fair compensation. So much for "wenming" Chaoyang.
