Book Mooch - Beijing's first Book Swapping Forum
Book lovers unite! You have nothing to lose.

WELCOME LETTER FROM THE MODERATOR:

When I lived in the States I heard about this fantastic site called www.bookmooch.com. The concept was simple: good books are meant to be shared. You buy book, you read book, you finish book, you post book online and then you swap the book with book lovers from all over the nation.

In Beijing, where a variety of good quality English language books are still quite hard to come by, this forum is meant to both connect book lovers with one another and expand everyone's reading libraries. It's also a forum for you to post your thoughts on a certain book and get other people's opinions.

Finally, this forum is a branch of the Beijing Book Club. We will choose a book every month to read and meet to discuss it over a leisurely dinner or brunch (depending on whenever people have time). The book club meetings will be half book club/half book swap so get posting, get sharing and we'll see you soon... books in hand.

CLICK HERE TO SWAP BOOKS In this section you can swap or request books.

CLICK HERE FOR THE BOOK CLUB In this section you can find out what the book club is reading and when we're meeting next.

CLICK HERE FOR THE GENERAL FORUM This link will take you to the general forum where you can browse the other topics posted such as Essential China reads, or Non Fiction Discussion. You can comment on Topics by posting Comments below. If you think a new Topic should be added for discussion, you may contact the moderators of this forum (dan and jennwong)

Great idea!

You want people to post the names of the books here?

I assume that it is not recommended to post contact details and that the recommended method of contact is via the CW website system.

I just re-read my previous comment and think it might be taken wrongly.

The book swap is a great idea.

Not intended as a sarcastic comment about posting names. Just try to work out how to contact the other person without posting all my details.

@forest

That's a good question. To contact another user, you can click on their name (next to their comment) that will take you to their profile page and you can select to contact them via our website that way. Otherwise, if you have a general comment for the board, you can just comment below like I have. Hope that answers your questions. :)

I'm just about to finish Kafka on the Shore and have a lot of other good books I could swap. How do I do this with you?

I was just reading Murakami's book of short stories. He's fantastic. If you want to put Kafka up for a swap, post it up on the topic "Do you have any good books up for grabs?" that is also part of the Book Mooch forum.

Kafka on the Shore is my favorite Murakami book, I think it's so beautiful and chilling and wonderful. I also have Norweigan Wood and Dance Dance Dance, if anyone's interested in those. The booksellers in Wudaokou (the guys in carts who sell "fake" copies) are always stocked up on Murakami, for some reason.

A friend of mine recently sent me Saul Bellow's 'Herzog' and 'Sons & Lovers' by D.H. Lawrence, if anyone wants!

@ Dan,

So this is not the place to post notices about book swaps??. The place to go is http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/articles/blogs-beijing/beijing-book-club/does-anyone-have-any-good-books-up-for-grabs/

So what's this for ?

@ Collin - it would be very useful to be able to preview comments prior to posting and/or adding an editing function to one's own comments.

I think I must be keyboard dyslexic or just too old to master anything more complicated than sharpening a quill pen.

@ Colin,

This is just the first post I made on the forum. It's the welcome letter. The actual forum can be located by clicking Book Mooch on your left hand sidebar. I got too excited when I made the forum and sent out the wrong link. :( But that means everyone can come to the welcome letter.

The forum actually offers a lot more. We have separate discussion panels on Chinese lit, Nonfiction lit, Children's lit and Fiction. We also have a book swap forum and a forum on our next Book Club meeting. Join in as many or as few as you like. It's a much needed group for everyone who enjoys reading and talking about books.

In that case you might wish to re-send your BJC e-mail. Or to add very clear instructions at the top of this thread re how to use this forum.

With most forums one enters via a general intro page which provides easy access to the various sub-forums and threads.

There is no Book Mooch on my left hand side panel. That panel shows the regular CW panel, Home, Listings, Events etc.

The link to Book Mooch is at the top of your original post.

I think she means that you are to go the Blog Forum link and then click on the Book Mooch forum!

Maybe it could be beneficial to have the two key topics always posted on the top of the forum -- The book swap and the book club threads? The flurry of activity is starting to confuse me as well. :(

I've added links to the welcome letter. Hopefully that will clear things up. Sorry for the confusion folks. Bear with us. This forum is only 5 hours old!

@ Dan - that's far better.

@ Jenn thanks, I just checked you are not wrong.

BTW I know what a blog is. I know what a forum is - I have my own and moderate another one,

But what is a blog forum? Is it the combination of the best (or worst) of both?

Let me jump in here. The idea behind a "blog forum" is basically to give a writer(s) a blog on CW. They post interesting topics/posts for the whole community to check out. The "comments" below compose the forum component. Would love your two cents.

It sounds to me like a "rose by any other name" game or maybe if it a "smells like a forum, looks like a forum and tastes like a forum" situation?

To me, this is a forum. Especially since this is not a blogger expounding on his/her pet theme (as a Swan Song?) but a discussion based forum on books, Beijing life and the importance of being Earnest. Never mind at least all is Quiet on the Western Front and Alls Well That Ends Well.

Blast !!! once again a typo - Please provide options to preview posts and to edit posts.

Otherwise I will have to start copying everything to word prior to posting.

Oh the shame, the shame!!
