The first book up for discussion is Peter Hessler's Oracle Bones. Published in 2006, Hessler's account of a changing China is interwoven with personal stories from his former students in Sichuan, radio show hostesses, aging academics, and a host of other citizens of the PRC. His search for the meaning and origin of oracle bones - fragments of bones that were used in ancient times to determine the future - provides a structure on which to hang these stories. The former New Yorker China correspondent writes with unusual clarity and sympathy of his subjects, making this book not only an informative, but deeply involving read.
