Was his defection from 'Communist China" selfish or the right thing to do?

The December book, Li Cunxin''s autobiography "Mao's Last Dancer" was a great choice of reads... with the exception that there were no copies available in town ;p

So... to do a quick synopsis of the part in question:

Li Cunxin is China's best ballet student (imagine: late 70's China) and he has gone to America to study with a premier ballet company. After becoming slowly disillusioned with his Communist beliefs, he decided to defect to America creating an international scandal. The good thing is that he was allowed to stay and learn from masters of ballet and became one of the best ballet dancers in the world. The bad thing is that his defection cut off all the other exchange programs between Chinese dancers and American dance companies.

What do you think? Was he being selfish or was it really just his decision and he made the right choice for himself?
