I always thought Christmas on Ice was fantastic and so endearing. I find his writing style to be a bit smug at times, as do I find most writers of his ilk (as in Augusten Burroughs, Dave Eggers, most of the McSweeney writers, etc). Still, I do like the fact that his stories criss cross the span of his published work, for me it makes the characters seem more real.
I think the best bet for more Sedaris is ordering off of Amazon. Otherwise, make a trip to Hong Kong and stock up!

I really don't like Dave Eggers. I got through two of his books but found them a bit tedious and pretentious although with flashes of really brillant writing. I adore McSweenys though, especially their reviews of new food. It's a worktime must.

Hey Dan, I do do do love 'You Shall Know Our Velocity" but wasn't about to get through the Heartbreaking Work blah blah whatever that novel was. It was too long and tedious, and pretentious as well, you're right. "You Shall Know..." on the otherhand, I found really interesting and great. It would be so great if you could get McSweeney's issues in Beijing! The cost would be astronomical though, when I lived in Canada I was mostly only able to drool at the elaborate issues they would put out, or else borrow them from my more devoted friends.

Hooray for the internet. Now you can browse McSweeny's in all its amazing-ness (and pretentiousness) online: http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/newfood/

I don't think Me Talk Pretty One Day is fiction ... just saying. Great book though.

would it be non-fiction with fictional elements then?

I suppose MTPOD is more of a collection of essays composed in a humorous light. I don't think it's entirely non-fiction either. I'm going to go with that it's somewhere in between.

Yup...I think MTPOD is in between. Book made me laugh! Oh...and I agree...he does recycle his stories. Barrel Fever was an interesting read for me. I think this was his first book. As I was trying to confirm if it was his first book, I stumbled upon bad reviews of it in amazon.com. I think it was mostly because they read his later works first. And maybe because they don't care for the morbid and slightly grotesque. His humor in Barrel Fever had less...ummm...finesse in it.
Interestingly, David's sister, Amy Sedaris is a comedienne of Comedy Central fame.

Amy Sedaris makes me crazy. I don't know what it is about her, but I find her so abhorrent that I can hardly stand to look at her, much less listen to what comes out of her mouth. Has anyone watched 'Strangers with Candy'? It would have been the perfect sitcom if she hadn't had a starring role. Still, she is a fantastically funny writer.

I think she contorts her face way too much! She's just not pleasant to look at. But if you check out her photos, if she smiles like any normal person, she looks okay...

I just watched Naked again free on PPTV live. One of my favourite movies, so dark.

I would like to get my novel THE FAKE CELEBRITY IN CHINA featured on this site.
How can I do this?

hi,dan,"Has anyone read this book? Does anyone know where I can get more Sedaris? I've looked at Chaterhouse but no luck. " I have saw DRESS YOUR FAMILY IN CORDUROY AND DENIM by David Sedaris in GARDEN BOOKS several days ago, maybe you can go there to have a look. There are fabolous good books there. The Address is 44 Guang hua Road, oppoiste the Brazil Embassy.Have a good luck!

Me Talk Pretty One Day - David Sedaris I adore David Sedaris's novels but I'll be the first to admit he recycles his stories. Stories and themes in Me Talk Pretty One Day are repeated in Naked, Dress your Kids in Cordoroy and Christmas on Ice. In Christmas on Ice however, we get a glimps of Sedaris's fiction writing ability which is wierd and doesn't quite seem to come together. However, I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys comedy as Sedaris makes some very funny and true to life observations about how we interact with one another. Has anyone read this book? Does anyone know where I can get more Sedaris? I've looked at Chaterhouse but no luck.
If anyone knows this reference "We're not your puppets or dogs herr puppet meister" please please please write back. I've been wanting to laugh about that part with someone for much to long.
