It was a battle on and off the pitch last night as the US and Brazil faced-off in the women's gold medal football final. While Brazilian whiz kids Marta and Cristiane tried to dipsy-doodle their way between US stalwarts Lori Chalupney and Hope Solo, American and Brazilian fans were locked in a similarly intense fight to out-cheer their opponents.
Teams went back and forth as chants of "Ole! Ole-Ole-Ole!" were drowned out by deep bellows of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" Brazil temporarily gained the upper hand again when one especially enthusiastic Brazilian fan commandeered an Olympic volunteer's microphone and led the crowd in a boisterous round of "Baxi Jiayou!" Chinese fans with no particular allegiances happily screamed "Jia you!" for whichever country happened to be loudest and often neglected the on-field action to join a cheer or wave.
In the end, the match was decided in overtime with American standout Carli Lloyd finding the low corner of the net in the 96th minute. Though the final score was 1-0 for the US, the contest in the stands came out a draw.
