Draping - How to Pull it Off

Clash of the Titans, Samson and Delilah, Gladiator.. what do these films have in common? The most relevant answer is togas. Yes, this week we're looking for draped, sweeping fabrics hanging fabulously from the shoulders in Grecian Goddess fashion. See Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci (huge embellished shoulders), Burberry (bodycon, wrapped sherbert-coloured skirts and dresses) and Lanvin (sheer perfection).

This is a tricky one. How to wear the draped look? Go too far and you risk drowning yourself in costume-like folds of bed sheets; if you don't go far enough, what's the point?

Here's the best Beijing has to offer:

Dresses

H&M has a bright peach dress with elasticated waist and drape front for RMB199. We like the bold colour. Wear with H&M's mink-coloured wide belt with suede buckle(RMB69.90).

With sequin-embellished shoulders and draped silk, French Connection has a carbon copy of the Givenchy dress for RMB1999 in cream and grey.

Uniqlo's guest designer Costello Tagliapietra has created several draped dresses for the DI range, from RMB199.

What else

We like the linen-mix joggers with tapered cuffs at H&M (RMB199) and think that they'd go well with a massive t-shirt or vest tied in a knot at the front.

Accessories

H&M is outdoing itself in the bangle department. In case you hadn't noticed, we're in love with the perspex variety at the moment (nod to Burberry) for RMB79.90. We like their punky metal cuffs for RMB49.90 and the assorted bangles in bright neon colours for RMB99.

Shoes

We found some leather, cross-over strap platform heels in Nine West at Grand Pacific Mall. At RMB1090, they come in yellow, red and grey.

Stella Luna has some Burberry-esque wrap-around heels in grey and tan for RMB1380.

Having said all that

..for a truly original outfit, we think the best thing to do is to get yourself a scarf. H&M has loads in different shades and fabrics. Zara and Uniqlo have good selections too. You can have a lot of fun with this, tailor-making it to suit your shape and personal style. You want a slightly heavier fabric so that it drapes well and the more fabric there is to play with the better.

Picture this: an oversize vest or t-shirt. Let's say it's pink and slightly see-through. It's probably from American Apparel. Now imagine a long black scarf, wrapped round the neck, one side long enough to reach to the waist, the other side hanging longer. Pull the longer end up to meet the shorter end at the waist and wrap a white leather weave belt from Uniqlo tightly over both, securing the longer side in an effortlessly chic drape.

There are a few rules though:

  1. Don't lose your figure under all the excess fabric. Keep it young-looking and fitted with a good belt.

  2. Keep some part of your outfit sharp, either with some big shoulders or strong accessories. This look is not delicate, it's bold.

  3. Avoid too much white. Feel free to mix fabrics and textures and colours.

I went shopping today and the number one thing I got out of the experience was: the early 90s are back with a vengeance. All the things we've been made to think don't look that good (read: lots of cheap looking floral prints on jersey) for 15 years are now "cool." How are we meant to embrace that and pull it off? Also, I feel that the baggy design of a lot of clothing here looks totally cute on a Chinese girl but makes European girls look pregnant. Advice? Thanks.

First thing I'd say is, if you don't like it don't wear it. The worst thing you could do is wear something you don't like just because it's trendy. Secondly, the draping trend provided a bit of a quandary for us this week. There are plenty of cowl-neck tops and dresses but they just didn't have enough pzazz! to be noteworthy. If you're after something subtle, have a look at this [Waterfall Blazer from asos.com](http://www.asos.com/Sarah-Jessica-Parker/Asos/Asos-Drapey-Waterfall-Blazer/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=917824&cid=2641&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=200&sort=-1&clr=Black). It's the latest incarnation of the ever-popular blazer.
