Private Car Owners In Beijing -- TAKE A CHILL PILL

Seriously.

(That's why we put the call in ALL CAPS.)

TAKE A CHILL PILL -- the newly announced government car restriction schemes are probably the last thing you'll need to worry about. You probably to worry about UFO attacks, relationships in danger, and being banged into by a drunk cabbie than getting your car off the road -- "because it's the law, that's why"...

If you do own a car to which the tag ALL YOUR CAR ARE BELONG TO US (the government) applies to, take note: you will feel the pinch as on Mondays to Fridays, you'll have to take your car off the roads. If your car belongs to a government organization, "mass organization", or a State-owned enterprise, you're off the roads on these days:

• Mondays -- if your car license plate ends with a 1 or a 6
• Tuesdays -- for those who end with 2s or 7s
• Wednesdays -- the turn of those with trailing 3s or 8s
• Thursdays -- if the Automobile License Plate Gods granted you a license with a 4 or a 9 at the very end
• Fridays -- but only if your last number is a 5 or a zero

For 99.9999% of you (remember, this is one big city), you're on the road whenever your spirit tells you to be on the roads fresh and early at the stroke of midnight on September 21, 2008. Rejoice!

Sounds like an extremely complicated system to which I've seen no less than four drivers in Beijing get out of their vehicle at a traffic light, walk to the trunk of their car and either remove the last number from the license plate or affix a new number — in both situations the last number appears to have been a sticker — over the last number so they remain "within the law."

Yupy... looking forward all traffic jams.. sitting in my car presing the clutch until i can't fell my left leg no more... Listening to too much talking and same old music as always... But at least I don't get to worry about sticking the fake no. on my plates right.

@zachary_franklin It's not official insanity for nothing. This is the Jing, after all. Just thank the Road Gods that the rest of us are left alone...

@mazolinc Hell on the roads is when you nudge an Audi A6L or something like that ahead (auto transmission, of course) for just about a few feet. Just try it on one of these things. At least with a manual, the car comes to a stop relatively smoothly...

Taxi drivers made BIG MONEY (and so did the Subway, of course) over the last 60 days. Why are about 60%-70% of people DYING for the odd/even measure to remain in effect? Those who voted obviously must have been from the bus, Subway and taxi companies... (That's my guess anyway...)
