So what does JUMP have in store this summer?
JUMP is working with Sports Beijing and the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) on some innovative youth leadership programs. The programs work with student athletes who want to take leadership roles in the realm of sports, like peer coaching, being captains on teams, coordinating community sport activities and so on ... JUMP is also planning on creating a global leadership program and summer adventure program, which would include climbing, trekking and outdoor pursuits.
What makes the JUMP Foundation different from other summer programs for students?
JUMP programs are different from other summer programs because of the intense focus on personal leadership development and the fact that JUMP operates as a social enterprise. Twenty percent of the fees paid for JUMP programs go directly into the JUMP Development Fund, which supports leadership programs for underprivileged youth.
After completing these programs, what have the kids gained from the experience?
Most important, kids have a super fun experience to talk about. In addition to having fun, participants refine skills in personal leadership, setting goals, problem-solving, conflict resolution and group communication ... Students develop their own way of working with a team and thinking about how they can help develop a community.
Do a lot of kids just want something for their college resume?
Students do get a global leadership certificate, so they have something that will look great on a resume, but ... when we ask the kids what was the most valuable part, they talk about life action planning. We work with them on life mapping, answering questions about where they have come from and where they want to go. Most kids don’t take time to ask what their vision is for the next year or the next five years. JUMP programs focus on asking questions like: What do you want to get out of life? What is your legacy? How are you going to change the world?
