The Scandals of the 5th Ring Road

The 5th Ring Road is, unfortunately, filled with scandals galore. What do you expect -- from a beltway full of trucks parked in the middle of nowhere, of exorbitant prices turned full-gratis, and of flying cats and blocks of wood?

I saw some of the craziest driving today. At around Pingfang Bridge, this (for lack of a better word) totally demented Jeep driver saw a dead cat on the road. As if the Jeep driver wasn't psychotic enough, he let his right wheel flip the cat by running into it, and it was just simply the most psycho and most disturbing thing I've seen happen on the roads lately.

I was immediately next. Some truck managed to let one of its blocks of wood slip by. (They were in a rush, no doubt.) Unfortunately -- this hit the front of my car. It didn't look like I ran into another guy, but the block of wood did its deed and smashed head-on into the front side of my car.

If a harmonious society is one where you build a beltway next to a grave and have insane cars go free and full nuts on it, I give this the full thumbs-up. Honestly.

Pingfang Bridge - that's the one over Yaojiayuan Lu.

They are busy redoing the whole of that area. One rumour talks about enhancing access to the 5th Ring from there, another talks about a new road to the airport.

The place has become a total disaster area. It is now a tad better to use the Dongba/ Qikeshou junction. The whole area though is choc a block with country bumpkin drivers (cars without lights at night, no stopping at traffic lights, U-turns through two/three lanes of traffic). I have had a couple of near heart attack level misses in that area.

Yup - they're sticking in a new airport access road (Airport East Freeway).

Chaoyang North Road is easily the worst. Trucks run through red lights like MAD!

Depends where - both Chaoyang Lu and Chaoyang Bei Lu are more often that not so packed that nobody goes anywhere like mad, just gets mad.

I now often go the long way round and get there faster than taking the direct routes. Either the small roads to the Lido and from there to the Lufthansa or round the 5th to the Tongzhou highway and from there to Guomao
