The Subway in the Olympic Year: Police Pets and Delicious Duck
Hey, relax. The year of the Rat is still some days off. But no, those guys in charge of the city can't. They're in -- animal mode.
• Police Pets: Police Dogs. Now available at your next subway station. They look cute, but they've a mission: if you carry anything dangerous, you'll be caught. (They didn't stick out a great big DANGEROUS ARTICLES PROHIBITED sign at the entrance for nothing!) If you're like your Beijingologist, though, you should probably escape in one piece, only to live to another day. Those dogs are specially trained to work in subway stations (with Mozart or screeching brakes no less), and they won't attack you. But -- be nice; the police force asks you to keep a fair and reasonable distance from the dogs, to refrain from teasing them, and not to feed them.
• Delicious Duck: Peking Duck on Subway Trains. The subway. It's train-lickin' good. Don't come in with a paper plate and a chopstick -- this is, after all, a subway station, not a restaurant. But what are we supposed to make of subway trains with Peking Duck covered all over it? (Yum!) To show off Beijing's more tastier cultural stars, the Peking Duck, drama shows, the Great Wall and even that nasty(-to-your-alcohol-free-Beijingologist) erguotou have been engraved for good on subway trains. Note to self: Do NOT chase a Peking Duck subway train... that's what your Peking Duck food voucher is there for!
Beijing in animal mode 219 days before the Olympics.
Can't wait!

hey david feng! since you seem to be CW's resident subway expert, i was wondering if you could answer this query:
i have to take the train to Wang Jing tomorrow from Si Hui Dong, but since you can no longer transfer at DongZhiMen station (until Jan. 10th, anyways), how does one get onto Line 13? i read somewhere that you can transfer at YongHeGong or DongSi, but this doesn't make sense to me. are those stations even connected to Line 13?
i am so confused, and so sadly ignorant of the train system. please help!

funny, yesterday i went to the police station to register living in my new apartment, and saw my first police dogs since moving to china. they were huge german shepards and were doing training excercises in a pen with police officers. very impressive, they were!
