Wanbao, June 24, 2009: Exams, Exams!

God, aren't you pleased that you're no longer -- you know, someone in school? Unless you're a student yourself -- whereupon we'd like to sympathize with you. See, even your Beijingologist can't spell "sympathize" -- and that's not the only news of the day. Big Wanbao headliner: Score levels and results have been announced for the university entrance exams, while those going onto secondary education are sitting exams today. Topic for free essay: "___ has not yet ended." (If your Beijingologist had a chance, he'd go: The Subway works have not yet ended. But that's only your Beijingologist. An irrelevant soul.)

Other headliners tell of amazingly high temps in Beijing -- but our neighbors in Tianjin have it worse. AccuWeather tells of a stir-fried Monday next for the Jin, with RealFeel temps going up to 46°C. We sure hope the HSR won't get -- you know, put off by the oven 120 km southeast of our capital. In other news: they're digging again at Zhoukoudian after a 72-year Peking Man digging pause, and North Korea's thinking of spoiling America's 4th of July -- with a nuke test.

The news of the day is on page 4 -- if you've got H1N1 and you're not going into (self-)isolation, expect criminal charges; and if you happen to pollute while being part of a company, the company gets fined up to CNY 200,000. With the economy this bad worldwide, we're sure you don't want to try. The police could also force you into isolation if you're not doing it yourselves for 7 days after you return back to the mainland.

Surreal forecasters tell of temperatures tomorrow up to 35°C -- surreal, because AccuWeather forecasted just a few days earlier temps of up to 42°C. Even the Observatory measured something over 39°C later this afternoon -- and that thing's on the fringes of the 5th Ring Road. Still, we advise you to chill down as much as you can tomorrow -- there'll be sun, clouds, and unbearable temps over the daytime -- 23°C to 35°C. If your car's license plate ends in 3 or 8, that's your day out from 07:00 to 20:00 inside (but not including) the 5th Ring Road.

Alles klar?

A rare case of malware has taken the Beijingology.com page hostage, and the linked Twitter account @Beijingology seems to be hanging by its last legs as it suspends itself into thin air. Oh well, there's still hope: follow David on Twitter to find out more about the Jing -- especially if it's got something to do with the Beijing Subway!
