Wanbao! Wanbao! Jun 14, 2008: The Culture-ish Capital
The capital is a cultural capital -- the Forbidden City right in the middle of our city is a dead giveaway, as is the Great Wall on the outskirts. 35 more cultural relics are part of Beijing, so yells the headliner -- this time, coming from the Capital Museum. 55 days to the Olympics (and 84 to the Paralympics), it looks like our capital is more and more -- Kultur pur, as they say in German.
Other Page One headliners:
• Not good: disasters plague the US (Iowa) and Guangxi (floods).
• Central government: 2008 has been a mix of results and disasters. The economy needs to grow. We need to get the Beijing Games in order. Unite! (Top right-hand corner slogan.)
• World Cup: Netherlands 4:1 France, Italy 1:1 Romania
• CNY 8,000 for an 8-day trip to Taiwan. The agreement was just inked yesterday; already, they want your money!
Elsewhere...
• The Beijing North Railway station is also getting in the mood for a touch-up and renovation -- the "back of the Chinese dragon" is now being built at Beijing North. (Bottom pic, page 2)
• Is your credit rating good or bad? The very first "Care For Your Credit Day" is reality today. (Page 3)
• Gas + Olympics = Olympic Gas Stations. That's one gas station to begin with... (Page 3, top-right hand corner pic)
• A snake! Holy... a snake managed to -- well, snake its way into a residential building in -- get this -- central Beijing's Xuanwu District. We guess that the mass traffic didn't spook the thing already. The police cornered it. (Page 4)
Clouds, clouds and more clouds; 20°C - 29°C.

It's not the World Cup, it's Euro 2008.
