Wanbao! Wanbao! Jun 2, 2008: The Hunt for the Missing Plane

A military plane from the Jinan Military Area is missing near Wenchuan, Sichuan -- they're still very much looking for the lost train. The big pic on Page 1 shows military personnel searching for the plane near Zhaogongshan in Hetaoping Village, Wenchuan. (More on this on Page 5.) Quake-wise, the lake at Tangjiashan may spill over -- the less-than-bad news (obviously no good news) is that all personnel have been evacuated, and 12 satellite spots are keeping an eye on the situation.

The big headliner, meanwhile, talks more about things happening back home in the capital. The exam permits for the university entrance exams have already been handed out as of today -- 67 days till the Olympics and 96 days till the Paralympics. Final results will be out on June 26, 2008. And the flame -- it's in Jingzhou, Hubei.

Elsewhere...

• A market in Yuegezhuang, Fengtai got caught using super-thin plastic sack. Result: a CNY 10,000 fine was handed out on-the-spot. Ow. The "Industry and Commerce police" (that's what they're called, by the way) will be doing thorough checks through August 1, 2008. Your Beijingologist paid CNY 0.20 for a plastic sack today in Shunyi; they're good, and at that, stable (able to hold five 0.5 liter drinks!). No longer "crappy" (if I may) sacks that break ten steps outside of the store! (Page 8, lower pic)

• The new Driving License is out -- counterfeit-proof (forgers need to break through 33 new counterfeit marks before they're successful). If you've an existing license, you'll get the new forgery-proof license when you change your current one at the end of the 6-year period. The price is still the same: CNY 10/license. (Page 8)

• If you're sending liquids, powders or gels, you'll need police permission. The new ban applies from June 1, 2008. As a result, the number of packets through the postal system with liquids went down sharply -- we're talking about 50% here. (Page 8)

• Irresponsible trucks: yes, they queued up, but they took the wrong side of the road (the gas station was on the left side of the road) and made life hell for "normal" cars. The reason: they crammed in to get oil -- after all, "the price is right". (Long lines of trucks can be seen all over Beijing these days. It's a nightmare.) (Page 10)

T-storms the norm, 16°C - 22°C. Please get ready for your arrival in a soggy Beijing.

I think it applies if you're sending the stuff. Not sure if you're receiving the mailing. I'd say it'll apply for any size liquid / gel, to be on the safe side of things.

Hope this helps!
