Wanbao! Wanbao! May 13, 2008: The Tragic Tremors

The horrible tragedy that has befallen Sichuan, as well as areas next to the area, dominates the headlines 87 days before the Games. Virtually no mention of the flame in Quanzhou, Xiamen. No longer in a festive mood, the tremors dominated much of the discussion around the nation.

• Hu Jintao: All-round efforts must be made at recovery efforts.

• Wen Jiabao: All roads to the disaster areas must be cleared up before midnight.

• Free passage to all recovery vehicles.

• The capital's in Donation Mode. Everyone's donating money.

• Beijing quake: Sichuan rocked Beijing; no separate quake "just" from Tongzhou. (In other words, just one quake, not two -- not "one from Sichuan, one from Tongzhou.)

Elsewhere:

• Just In Case: The capital's getting ready, with areas made for makeshift tents near the city wall ruins near Chongwenmen. (Pic, page 12)

• If you bang into bridges again, you could find yourself in criminal custody. That's after the Big Bang near Huawei Bridge last day. (Page 15)

• A new police car (with a new camera system) is on the road. The camera will instantly detected vehicle plates which have been altered, or cars that have not gone in for the annual check, as well as cars that have been de-registered or are supposed to have been dumped. The driver of the offending vehicle will be stopped at the next crossing. (Pic, page 17)

• The new plastic bags, to be reality in June 2008, will cost you CNY 0.10 to CNY 0.40 a pop. (Page 18)

Mix of clouds and sun, 12°C - 22°C.
