Wanbao! Wanbao! May 14, 2008: Give! Give! Give!
Now is the time to give! The first 15 pages are all about how the capital and the nation are reacting in the wake of the horrible tragedy that has befallen Wenchuan. The Magnitude 7.8 quake prompted instant response from Zhongnanhai, as well as from all over the country -- Beijing included. People stood outside all night to give -- blood, in particular, as the Big Pic shows.
If you're giving by means of your bank, your donations will be exempt from processing charges if you're going to the Bank of China, China Construction Bank, ICBC (counters only), and China Merchants Bank (within Beijing). Huaxia Bank is still charging ("they haven't got the notice yet" is the published "excuse"), though.
Meanwhile, beware of phishing sites that have propped up. Check twice if you're giving on a Tencent site -- those baddies are trying to make a bad situation worse. All we can say in light of this is -- what goes around, comes around!

• A gambling gang has been eliminated in southern Beijing's Fengtai District. The loot: CNY 600K. (Page 18)
• Slip and sue: A 52-year old customer slipped on the stairs (in -9°C temps) after ice gathered at a Daoxiangcun store in Guang'anmen. The court ordered Daoxiangcun to pay CNY 93K. Makes sense -- remember, you have to care for the customer all the way -- and that includes places like the staircase (as long as it's still within the confines of your store)! (Page 18)
• Is your CV so true -- that it's fake? For fear of not getting a job, more and more people are resorting to faking their CV -- by overstating how well they did, as well as overdoing their incomes and how long they were at their previous job. Well, now we have this thing called -- the background check. Demand for background checks are increasing, but in China, it's a no-go unless personal consent is obtained. Still, there's the writing on the wall: you have only yourself to ruin if your CV is -- untrue. (Page 19)
A sudden rainstorm today without the tweets that herald the sudden storm. None of this tomorrow, though, and we might even get some sun. 12°C - 24°C.
