Wanbao! Wanbao! May 9, 2008: Ding Dong - It's the Qianmen Tram!
Ding dong (I think it only does "ding", not "dong") -- it's the Qianmen tram! 91 days before the Games, there it is, right on page 1 of the Wanbao! The pleasure of travelling in one of these things, however, was reserved only for CPPCC members this morning -- the average commoner, remember, is supposed to wait for that kind of stuff...
Other headliners:
• Get yourself a "green" (as in environmentally-friendly) shopping bag with your fingerprint on it! Never mind the Chinglish; it's time to be Green!
• Night checks on the roads will be with us until the end of the Beijing Olympics. LIve with it...
• There'll be three beds for the elderly to relax in after three years. It's good to see Beijing take care of the laoren.
Elsewhere...
• The new Dawanglu Subway station exit near China Central "Place" (Chinglish?) is nearly done. It's straight to Huamao in the future -- no more crazy road crossings! (Pic, page 2)
• No more liquids in your postal mail. Also, get ready for mail checks -- security's being upped in the run-up to the Olympics. (Page 3)
• New phone booths are popping up near the Olympic Green. Transparent, trendy and eye-catching. (Pic, page 5)
• The Bird's Nest has an address: Number 1, Guojia Tiyuchang South Road (or National Stadium South Road). The Water Cube, too, has an address: Number 11, Tianchen East Road.
Wet at night, dry and sunny during the daytime. 9°C - 21°C.
