Rocking his signature hairdo (20 kuai just around the corner), El-Mar Bengal is a fixture of the Beijing community who is instantly recognizable. Notorious for his annual aircraft carrier raves he organizes and performs at, DJ El-Mar is one man who is effortlessly dressed for any occasion. Just don’t expect him to be wearing something too formal—“My style is pretty easy, kinda like urban casual. I sometimes dress up at night if I feel like it, but never wear suits,” he says. El-Mar describes both his musical and fashion tastes as “quite European, but I don’t think my clothes represent a music type,” save when he was 16 and “listened to rave music and looked like a raver.” When it comes to brands, El-Mar is indifferent: “I don’t care if it's a big name brand or something I just bought out of a car trunk on Gulou. If I like it, I will buy it.” When shopping for brands, he might opt for Diesel, Energie or G-Star. As for local Beijing fashion, El-Mar is a fan of Plastered, Jungle, and the Wudaokou Market, which “is always good for some surprises.” Judging from El-Mar's recent walk down the runway at the annual Beijing Fashionista Awards, he’s not just a party planner/DJ—he is also the main event.
