Live-Blogging Breakfast

I love The Boat. Floating on the Liangma River, a five-minute walk from my house, The Boat is one of my favorite hangs in Beijing. They have a stage for live music on the glass-enclosed second floor and DJs in the below-river-level basement, not to mention good pizzas and Stella drink deals. They also have wi-fi. So, after work, I like to climb up in one of the dinghies, plug in my laptop ... and do more work. Like Ozzy Osbourne, an editor never rests.

When the Boat's co-owner BB told me they'd soon be serving brunch on the weekends, I was ecstatic. This meant I'd be able to snag their wi-fi and work while eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, here I am ... live-blogging breakfast.

11:53
I walk over the bridge onto The Boat's bow. There's a sign advertising lunch. "Uh-oh," I think. "This isn't brunch. It's lunch." I consider turning around and forgetting the whole thing. "But, wait," I tell myself. "I can't give up just yet. Besides, they're offering huge set meals for only 50 kuai."

11:57
Settle into my dinghy. The waters below are calm. I think the waitress is asleep at the bar.

11:59
Wake up waitress, and she brings me a drink menu. It's still too early for booze. I request the lunch menu.

12:01
Just as I had feared, there's not a single breakfast item on the menu. But, the set lunch includes coffee. Good enough for me. I order a salad, soup, pizza and coffee for just RMB50.

12:02
I tie my shoe.

12:07
I am online. It's beautiful in here. My laptop is happy to get some sun. I start working on City Weekend's Restaurant and Bar Awards cover story. The Boat is on here somewhere ... but you'll have to wait two weeks to find out where.

12:23
The coffee, salad and soup arrive. I wish I could have just ordered breakfast. I really just need an egg and toast. This is more than I bargained for.

1:02
Pizza arrives. I'm already full. I set it beside the cacti on the windowsill, and get back to work.

1:27
Breakfast is over. My work is almost over too. I suddenly realize that live-blogging breakfast is the silliest idea I have ever had. I sign off and focus my attention on deciding where I should live-blog afternoon snack time from.
