Sanlitun DVD Crackdown

I was in Sanlitun last night and witnessed a crackdown on two of the expat community's favorite DVD stores. Police watched over as employees cleaned all the DVDs from the shelves and placed them in garbage bags. When I left Mingle later in the evening, the lights were off inside.

Needless to say, as the Olympics approach, Beijing can expect to see more DVD stores go dark.

"NO! That's where I buy all my DVDs!" cries a colleague right now as I type this in the CW office. "What's left in Beijing when you can't get an unlimited supply of media for 10 kuai a disc? I ... I ... I hope they're just making Sanlitun an example, and the other ones stay open ... But No! The other ones won't have the fantastic selection of Western films. Oh God! I have to go get the latest season of Ugly Betty before it disappears!!!"

I guess you just can't keep a good DVD store down. It's back up and running with 1/10 of its previous selection, slowly restocking the shelves with more Hollywood hits for 10 kuai.
