American Expats, Get the Vote!
We hope you're still feeling competitive because the US presidential election this 2008 is looking a lot like some of those Olympic matches we've been watching. VP picks are in and now no one knows what's going to happen. Your vote's important and absentee ballot registration is NOW.
The other day a friend asked who the governor of Alaska was to prove that American's don't know anything about their country. Well, now everyone knows exactly who Governor Sarah Palin is, the VP pick for GOP candidate McCain, and the woman who's now stolen the spotlight from Obama's acceptance of the nomination and his pick, Senator Joe Biden.
To vote for the US President you'll need to request your ballot by late-October (depending on your state) and send it in 1-5 days before November 4.
Fortunately, the U.S. Embassy makes it easy by hosting a voter registration drive on Wednesday, Sep 3 outside the American Citizen Service (ACS) Section at the embassy. Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. you can can come fill out that pesky ballot request form (with a volunteer right there telling you exactly where to write everything) and the embassy will mail it out for you for free. For those with kids or childish tendencies, there will be a coloring table and snacks.
The American Citizen Service Section is at #2 Xiu Shui Dong Jie, Chaoyang District. Here's City Weekend's map and listing if you have trouble.
They're making history back home. Just because we're an ocean and a couple time zones away doesn't mean we can't be part of it. And if we've learned anything this Olympics in China it's that it's okay to show unabashed love for your country. USA JIA YOU!
