Taking the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is a rite of passage—and an excellent way to prove your linguistic superiority over FOB laowai (just kidding, we hate those guys). But don't think it's just for eternal students hanging out in the Wu. The HSK is essential if you want to enter a Chinese language-based program of study here in China. Also, no matter on your career plans, proven proficiency in a foreign language is always good resume fodder.
For most purposes, the New HSK will be the test you want to sign up for. The older version is still around, but only at BCLU. It’s really only for those who want challenge the legendary monstrosity that was the HSK of years past.
If you’re a student, your university will help you sign up to the HSK. Also, those regularly commuting to a language institution will have no problem finding someone to help. But for the rest of us, signing up online is probably the easiest option. It’s actually pretty easy—and for the most part, you can do it in English (yeah, we know, if we’re truly hard-core, we’d do it all in Chinese). Here’s a schedule for the New HSK 2012--the next exam will take place on March 18 with a Feb 20 registration deadline.

First, go to www.chinesetesting.cn/goliuchengtu.do and click on the level you want to take. There’s a detailed explanation for each level (six in all) and information on speaking tests. Go here to get an idea of the sort of questions appearing at each level.

You’ll then create a new user account and fill in some basic details about yourself. Fill in all the necessary details and click submit. You’ll then be registered with the HSK website.

Next comes the hardest part. None of the testing center names are given in English—and to make matters worse, you can’t filter out other Chinese cities. We suggest going here and figuring out the most convenient place to take your exam. We suggest Renmin University (中国人民大学) because cab drivers will know it—and there's a subway stop close by as well.

After that, you’ll need to fill in more detailed personal information (while dodging the annoying image link). Make sure you get it right, because this is the information that's going on your test admission ticket. It's going to have to be a match with your passport. Next, you'll need to upload a photo. Sounds like a pain, but actually isn't. You can just snap a photo with your webcam right then and there.

After that, you just confirm your registration, check your inbox and go pay registration fees at your chosen test center. Now all you have to do is get down to the the real hard work: studying to pass that HSK.
Yes, it's meant to be funny ... as in Da Shan taking the HSK ... since he's wildly famous in China for speaking Chinese better than any other foreigner in all of history. The image is simply a joke -- not a real certificate that Da Shan actually got.... 0_o
Because he speaks Chinese so fluently? I've always wondered why people are so anti-Da Shan. The guy worked hard and speaks another language at a native level. That's pretty impressive, no?
Oh yeah, I hate that guy -- that's why we like making fun of him. :)
Sometimes we just don't like someone when we see them, even when we don't know them at all. It's hard to explain. More like a sixth sense, and it's 100% personal. I simply don't like certain type of people. He unfortunately fall into that category. in Chinese we call it "bu shun yan". that's all. the end.
He is pathetic not because he speaks perfectly a second language. A lot of people speak perfectly 4 or 5 languages in this world. So speaking perfectly a second language is not really that a big deal. And I do enjoy seeing someone speaking well few languages, it means they care to be integrated in another culture, which is super nice and respectful. What I don't like about Dashan is maybe personal. I simply feel disgusted when I see him becoming a poster boy all over Taiwan and China, acting like a crown. Too commercialized. and of course it's all about making money, big money. Well, there is nothing wrong with making money with your talent, and his talent is definitely in marketing and PR, not really so much in language. which is ok too. I just don't like him, don't like his look, and don't like his feel. He is so ugly and unpleasant to my eyes. it's purely personal. sorry.

it's funny and ridiculous that the two languages texts on the certificate sample you are showing do not correspond at all! on English it shows Dashan from Canada and on the Chinese text it shows a lady named Huang Ying Ying from Thailand. HAHAHA! it's hilarious. Next time when you want to convince people to sign up for something serious such as the Language level certification, please at least use PROPER example. Don't take for granted that your reader can only understand one of the languages. Always be on the safe side and make your samples correct. It's about professional attitude. Good luck.
