Meet To Succeed at These Non-networking Events

Networking events often feel a bit forced, and a wallet can only hold so many business cards with names of forgotten faces. So tear off those name tags and get ready to find the people you need to succeed in these events that allow you to meet and greet, pressure-free.

The importance of networking and meeting new people should not be underestimated, especially in Beijing where word of mouth is king, says Tracy Driscoll, career coach with Aspire Coaching. Get creative, and search for events likely to draw the types of people you want to meet for both business and pleasure, she says.

Driscoll recommends checking out events designed for “healing and soul searching,” like classes at the Yoga Yard or “well-being” classes offered through the Yinyang Community Center. To get to know people at these, and other, events, Driscoll recommends keeping the focus on the other person.

“People are usually comfortable talking about themselves first," she says. "Listen to them and see what you learn.”

There are few better ways to meet new people than a day of hiking in the hills with spotty phone reception and little else to do but chat. Beijing Hikers offers weekend hikes of varying levels outside the city, and their hikes draw a wide range of people in both age and profession.

Ostensibly aimed at singles, Fishbowl Events' speed dating nights are also a great way to meet young professionals across a range of industries. At each event you'll be introduced to upwards of six new people through short, timed interviews.

Wordsmiths looking for good connections and a healthy dose of writerly advice will want to check out the Beijing Writer's Group, which meets every Monday at 7:30pm at The Bookworm.

Whether you're a fan of reds or whites, wines are an expensive taste that caters to a very specific clientele. Consider becoming a certified oenophile through classes with Wine and Spirit Education Trust to meet potential business connections in a relaxed setting.

Don't forget that you meet lots of others being active in sports! Playing on teams against others for weeks at a time leads to a much better connection than one-off events!
