Learning Chinese? Try nciku!
Before I head off for the weekend, I wanted to post an obligatory plug to one of the hottest new Chinese/English language learning resources on the web. nciku, who launched version 2.0 of their fantastic new website last night.
The site, which is part dictionary, part learning center, part discussion forum and part simple sheer usefulness, features an innovative Handwriting Recognition Tool, which allows any user to clumsily draw in Hanzi characters onto the site. With a click of the mouse, a list of every possible character you might be looking for pops up. There is a text-to-speech system that allows you to hear the pronounciation of words in either English or Chinese, and all users have the ability to create vocabulary and study lists.
There are tons of other features on the site as well, evidenced here in their introductory post, and as someone who uses the site quite often, I can vouch for it's usefulness. Happy learning, and if anyone has any other useful Chinese learning links, it'd be fantastic if you could post them as well.
By the way, nciku is hosting a giveaway promotion right now - win free iPODS, USB keys, web cams, keychains and the like here!
Happy weekend!

...Ah,I still think one of the threads called TBJ everyday Chinese on thebeijinger forum is brilliant....

Hey Victoria, Sure, that thread is certainly helpful. This isn't a competition though, just a posting of a useful resource! If you have any others, let us know!

Right, didn't want to offend.
But I don't think there is any website can really teach Chinese, there are just tools. the most important thing is to learn by urself.

Yeah, you are totally right on. I think the hardest thing for learners right now is that there is no definitive website that offers every single tool you could possibly need to learn Chinese. The nciku site is a really good resource, although no website is substitute for actual in class work with a teacher. A combination of everything - practical daily use, study, lessons, immersion in culture, etc, is the only way to fully learn the language.

That website is incredible. You're a legend of some sort.
