The summer holidays are upon us, and families across Beijing are getting ready to head to exotic destinations all over the world. But what could spoil an idyllic holiday more than a medical scare? Luckily, with just a little research you can steer your family clear of the health risks associated with overseas travel.

First, always research your destination before you book. Children often cannot describe the symptoms they are feeling, so it's best to avoid areas with a high risk of disease until they're older.

Next, consider the vaccinations that are needed and whether you have enough time to get them. I once had to travel at short notice and ended up having four sets of jabs in one go. It’s not something I would wish upon my son.

Also, think about the weather. Is it the rainy season? Is it hot and humid? If you are travelling through several countries, do any of them pose a yellow fever risk? If so, plan the order of your trip carefully.

No matter where you go, always pack a first aid kit with bandages, dressings and antiseptic. Allergy pills, cortisone and anti-diarrhea medication are also a good idea. The most common travel ailments are:

diarrhea

heat stroke

sunburn

injuries from accidents

Much less common are the terrible diseases we all fear—malaria, hepatitis and dengue fever. However, just because they're rare doesn’t mean you should treat them lightly. Sure you probably won't catch malaria, but if you do, you’ll be very ill. So stock up on anti-malaria pills regardless.

Both Beijing United Family Hospital and International SOS Beijing sell great first aid packs for travel. For ideas on other items to pack, check out The Daily Mail's ultimate holiday aid kit online.

If you are travelling with a pre-existing medical condition, pack enough medication for the trip and then some. You may also want to look up a couple clinics and hospitals located close to your destination—just in case.

Wishing you all safe travels this summer.
