Park Life

Being a bit of a music head, every occasion in my life is complemented or stained forever with a song; from the most humdrum (trip to the ATM, cue: Abba - 'Money, Money, Money') to the exciting (giving birth: Bow Wow Wow -'Fools Rush In!').

I don't plan it or search for it (and it's not always appropriate) but it's there and I can't seem to shake it for the rest of the day.

Sometimes it's great and the song is pulled out from a tiny drawer in the back of my head that I'd forgotten was there. And then it closes again and I move on.

Last week, I skyped a friend in the UK and 'London Calling' (The Clash) was with me for days.

Wandering through Ritan Park recently, Blur's 'Park Life' entered my head with such force that I had to sing it out loud. There was absolutely no excuse for this, I didn't even have my i-Pod with me. The worst thing about it (for other people, I have no shame) is that I sound like a dying cat the minute I attempt anything tuneful.

It's a great song but it still hasn't gone away and I made the mistake of teaching the chorus to Max. This means it could well be with us for quite some time. But it's OK, we can now sing it out loud in unison and I have the excuse of having a small child in my presence.

And at least it's child friendly, it could have been Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing in the Name' and someone might have called social services.

All together now for the (Park Life!) chorus:

"All the people

So many people

And they all go hand in hand

Hand in hand through their ... park life!"
