Let’s face it: Beijing can be a woeful place to spend the summer holidays. Blistering heat and stifling humidity are in abundance. We’ve managed to get by with a short trip to the UK, a few weeks at the Children’s House Montessori Kindergarten summer camp and lots of awesome play dates with friends around town.

Still, we’ve got another week to go before we can trot the kids back to school and it’s easy to become complacent. So whether you’ve been in Beijing the whole summer or have just returned from a trip abroad, here are my suggestions to help keep up the momentum.

Kids Ray Summer Camp at the Season’s Park clubhouse welcomes children 3 and up for kung fu, drama, mad science, storytelling, kid’s yoga and ceramic art. Classes are held in English and Chinese every day from 9am-3:30pm through the end of August. Part-time options are available.

The Bookworm Kids Club continues to run every Sunday from 11am-12pm. Leave your kids with teacher Hannah for an hour of storytelling, word games and fun while you browse the mags and grab a mug of joe.

Spend your last week away from the city by taking one last family jaunt to Mutianyu before the new school term begins. Check out the special offer on the new house for rent at [China Countryside Hotels] (www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/listings/travel/place-interest/has/china-countryside-hotels/) where you can relax with a bottle of wine under the Great Wall while your kids sleep soundly in their beds.

If you plan to remain downtown and need some indoor entertainment, Century Theater is hosting [Disney Live: Winnie the Pooh] (www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/events/49222/) from August 26-30. Order tickets at www.piao.com.cn and then watch your youngsters be mesmerized as Pooh Bear and his friends bring their wonderful adventures to life onstage.

That said, I hope you manage to make the most of the remaining holiday—after all, summer 2010 will be a long time coming
