I have a question: is a baby seats on my bike for my 9 month old a good idea? Ever hopeful that spring is here at last I have been looking wistfully at my gorgeous mountain bike and wondering about attaching a baby seat for Dylan. I have a vision of whizzing round the hutongs with the summer breeze in our faces enjoying a shared experience and bonding over the smell of axel grease. Then I get a reality check. I imagine having a puncture during one of Beijing's downpours with a screaming baby on the back, and wonder if it will be such a great idea I also have some safety concerns. What age is safe? Which seats are best? Rear or front fixed? The other thing bothering me is purely selfish, I have always loved being able to get my super lightweight bike out and cycle furiously, it gives me a great sense of freedom. The thought of a big ugly kiddy carrier weighing me down upsets me, not to mention the spoiled aesthetic. What do you think? the world.

Here in Chengdu, I've been thinking the same thing: wouldn't it be great to bike along with my two-year-old on the back along the idyllic riverside? I posed the idea to my husband who flatly said 'no'. He thinks it's just too dangerous, even with a sturdy baby seat and a proper bike helmet for our son. But I think here (and even in Beijing) there are places to ride that are on the safe side and I think it's a great way to interact with a little one--and possibly get some errands done at the same time. So the debate is far from over and I hope I win it before it gets too unbearably hot!

We've been limited to mini tours of the hutong up until now but his crash (safety) helmet arrives today so it's chocks away. (I got him a super cool Paul Frank with skull and crossbones!)

A mom just asked me where to buy those trailer things that you can hook onto the back of your bike for tykes to sit in. Any ideas?
