When I was a child, part of the fun of Christmas Day was wearing all the new clothes that Santa Claus had brought us. While most families reserve the requisite Christmas sweater for amusement purposes—usually at the expense of dads everywhere—holiday wear was a tradition in my family. Even as I outgrew the sparkles and taffeta, I kept the tradition alive with more stylish Christmas threads.
Trying to carry on this tradition with my son has thus far proven difficult. He prefers to remain in his pajamas for as long as possible, as getting dressed requires precious moments away from all his exciting toys. However, now that I have a baby daughter, I am reviving my family tradition and been scouring the city for great festive wear.
The first thing I discovered was that all our Christmas clothing shopping can be conveniently done in one spot: Solana. The new Zara Home has some great sleepwear for little cherubs —though at ¥299 for a sleep suit, it means little ones will be looking festive at a premium— and a super cute nightdress for older kids for the same price.
At nearby Mothercare I found adorable Santa outfits for both boys and girls from 3 months to 2 years (¥269). This is great news for parents like me who fancy dressing their little ones in full Santa gear (and let's face it, who wouldn’t?).
And then there's Okaidi, a French chain featuring clothing for children from birth to early teens. While there, I picked up a gorgeous faux gilet (a vest, essentially) for just ¥269. The silver detailing makes this piece stylish and festive, and helps keep out those winter chills.
Of course, if these prices are too steep, cheaper options are available. Nuren Jie, next to the American Embassy, is just the place for those in search of a bargain. Half-way down the street is Lao Xiushui, the old silk market where you’ll find Santa outfits and other holiday gear for as little as ¥10. I picked up a cute red velvet sleep suit for our baby daughter for just ¥20. Brands currently include Marks & Spencer, Next and Benetton.
With all of my purchases made, my family and I are now all happily decked out and ready for the big day. Happy holidays!
