EDISON CHEN SEX SCANDAL (the links)

Alright, I know this is low-class, but it deserves more than 254 words in the beginning of the national section of the magazine. This is the biggest sex scandal in the history of digital media. This is four times as big as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee or Paris Hilton, because it involves so many people and most of them were squeaky clean before this.

I'm sure lots of people I know are going to roll their eyes, "Milse are you really into this kind of thing?" "C'mon, they're normal people. Let them get on with their lives. That's what you'd want if this happened to you."

For the record, I somewhat agree with the second line of reasoning, but here's why I love this story: Everyday as I walk home, I pass by the ad to the right. Now click on the "view all images" link and compare the girl on the right in the ad to the bottom right section of picture number two, the appropriately named "cum face" on Xiaxue's blog. This makes me laugh out loud everyday. If nothing else, this sex scandal has added three minutes of unadulterated joy to my daily life, and I don't think it's going to run out soon. (Who knows how long it will take them to change that ad.)

And, for my editors, if you are wondering how this fits under the Great Expatations blog heading: 1. Edison Chen is an expat. (He is Canadian. If we are giving out a "Great Expat" award for work done in China, I want to nominate Edison for 2008.) 2. If, as an expat, you don't know about this already, you need it to properly enjoy Chinese society.

So, without further ado, the necessary links:

The Shanghaiist has had absolutely wonderful coverage of this whole event. If you are really into the pictures, I wouldn't know where to find them. But I think there's somebody in the comments section who does.

Xiaxue, Singaporean female blogger extraordinaire, has some comments on the whole thing from a girl's perspective. At least, I think this is how girls think. (Scroll down down a bit to Jan. 30. Also, this is Anonymoused, as it is sometimes hard to get to Xiaxue's blog.)

I have no idea what this site is called, but they seem to have the most detailed and updated coverage of Sex Clip-Gate. They have news posts of every twist and turn. I personally think that you only need the first two links, but, if you're really interested, this seems to have almost everything.

The Blemish. I'm glad I am associating myself with only the cream of the internet crop. Still, The Blemish, who I'd never heard of until Sex Clip-Gate, has been pretty vigilant about keeping up on this.

And, finally, the New York Times' tepid article on the subject. The article's not particularly enlightening, as if any of this was going to be "enlightening," but, come on, THE NEW YORK FREAKING TIMES. Again, I love this story.

And thanks go out to Blake, my editor, for turning me on to this whole thing. Aren't you glad you get your name on this, Blake?
