Celine Dion defies expectations to sing “My Heart Will Go On” in China

SHANGHAI | Soaked in vanilla scented candles and wearing a glittery frock of impenetrable diamond sheen, Canadian diva and pop star, Celine Dion made her China debut at Shanghai Stadium tonight. She sang her hit song “My Heart Will Go On”, despite weeks of bilateral meetings between event organizers and Celine Dion management as to whether the artist would be "taking chances" and not sing the hit song from the movie Titantic. Tensions remained high leading up to the concert. “It’s obviously been a big point of concern for both sides. "Celine Dion should respect the people’s resounding will to hear the single”, said Sherry Chen of Shanghai Municipal Live Concert Bureau.

Western media organizations had long speculated about the song’s presence for the evening but were barred from conducting any pre-concert interviews after a series of articles reported that Celine’s Beijing concert had been canceled due to air quality concerns. That did not stop, however, from pundits lining up to offer pre-concert analysis. “In her last five Asian city concerts, Celine Dion has sung lyrics containing the words love, lady, heart and angel in each one of her songs. There’s a 65 percent chance that based off that sort of rhetoric, she’ll sing My Heart Will Go On”, said a spokesperson from Shanghaiist immediately after reading a Shanghai Daily article.

Pressure for Celine to adhere to her long-standing concert playlist was high. “A live music concert is not the place to deviate from the will and wishes of the artist’s fans”, said a senior concert official speaking anonymously. Chinese fan response largely echoed the official’s comments, as there is tremendous support in the country and a public expectation that she would sing “My Heart Will Go On”. In the face of such intense scrutiny, Celine recently began to depart from earlier comments where she insisted, “Every night is a new show. We just get up there and try and put on a great concert for our fans” to more conservative comments as, “We like to go out there and give the people what they like”.

There were other surprises for the evening. Besides an impromptu baton twirl midway during her encore performance, Celine demonstrated her versatility and singing depth by covering everything from Eric Carmen’s “All by Myself” to a tribute effort for Freddie Mercury’s “The Show Must Go On”. But ultimately, it was the neon lit swaying motion of the highly pleased crowd and Celine Dion’s hand-pumping enthusiasm that kept energy high for the nearly two hour concert. The jumbotrons alit with scenes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, her right hand waving high as she belted out “My Heart Will Go On”, Celine didn't take any chances, and in the process, may have reassured a nation of its intrinsic sense of freedom.

Besides reporting that Celine Dion performed on Friday, April 11, 2008 at Shanghai Stadium, attending the concert and Celine’s twirling of the baton, this article is entirely fabricated by the author. He thanks his girlfriend.

Not true, but Dandi Wind did play a mind blowing cover of Safety Dance for their third encore that started when Dandilion pushed their camera man into the audience, forcing him to crowd surf.

It was actually a remix of The Power of Love. Mael and Dan were slow-dancing cheek to cheek. It was hotter than porn.
