Over 300 years old, the Hamburg Ballet is one of Germany’s four premier ballet troupes. The first troupe to perform ballet master Balanchine’s works in Europe in the 1950s, the Hamburg Ballet quickly became known for its nuanced and innovative performances. As art director, noted dancer and choreographer John Neumeier has brought a modern flavor to the ballet’s rigorously classical style. This mixing of modern dance and classical ballet has given it a distinct and unique performance style that has impressed audiences around the globe. On the troupe’s previous China tour, audiences were treated to renditions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and La Traviata. This time around dancers will perform two of Neumeier’s choreographed works, Third Symphony by Gustav Mahler and Nijinsky. The former is the first in a series of Neumeier’s symphony works, and is the most impressive. The latter is based on the life of the celebrated dancer Nijinsky. ¥180-800.
