As the youngest volunteer for the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), Lachlan, a Grade 5 student at WAB, has rubbed shoulders with Laurie Lawrence, Grant Hackett and hundreds of other Australian Olympic athletes, coaches and officials.
Lachlan's job? Helping to ensure that every Australian Olympic athlete receives a properly fitted leather lace-up or peek-a-boo patent leather pump as part of their official wardrobe for the Beijing Olympics. Part of the challenge is keeping track of all those shoes, which range in size from 3 - 19.
This young Australian and aspiring swimmer is one of many WAB students, parents, alumni, teachers, board members and library assistants who've returned to campus a month early to help the AOC execute the massive task of outfitting all of their athletes with over 100,000 items, ranging from socks and sports shoes to lightweight uniforms and stuffed "boxing kangaroos."
The AOC was approved by BOCOG earlier this year to establish an "Olympic home" at the Western Academy of Beijing, which is currently being used as a uniform distribution center and relaxation hub for the Australian team.
As an international school with a student body of over 1,450 students representing 57 different nationalities, and as a Beijing Olympic Education Model School, WAB cheers on all Olympic athletes as they live out their Olympic dreams!
