2008 Midi Delayed or Canceled?

Rumors are abound that Midi 2008 will be canceled or delayed. A call to Zhang Fan, head of the Midi School, did not yield a definitive answer. Zhang answered, "I'd rather not say right now. There will be an announcement tomorrow."

Although we heard that all visas were approved as of last week, another organizer close to the festival has told CW that, “Beijing MIDI Festival will be canceled or rescheduled.” After the cancellation of Shanghai Midi, the cancellation or delay of Beijing's Midi Festival would be a significant blow to China's live music scene, especially in a year with increased international attention on China's culture industries.

There’s currently a great deal of speculation as to why Beijing Midi would be canceled, but it's clear that with recent international protests and the fury unleashed after Bjork's concert in Shanghai, there is increased government skepticism toward large groups of people gathering (unless of course they're in front of a Carrefour).

Check back tomorrow for official comment.

UPDATE: Chinese media are now reporting that Midi Festival has been canceled due to lack of security support from police. Festival organizers are still trying to reach an agreement, however. And, there will be an official announcement tomorrow. Mini Midi at 2 Kolegas will continue. CW will keep you updated as the story develops.

Anyone betting this has something to do with the China-wide boycott of Carrefour and other foreign-owned establishments planned for May 1?
