Bar anniversaries are often little more than a ruse. After a few years of drunken hook-ups, the club wants you to give it flowers, buy it drinks and, of course, throw down for a ¥50 door fee. For myself and Beijing’s legions of hardcore music fans, 2 Kolegas’ five-year anniversary--which starts tonight and lasts through tomorrow--is different: the affection is real.
“2 Kolegas is like a secret Alexandrian garden of sound,” says Joshua Love of Proximity Butterfly. “It’s a library of China’s heart-felt musicians—raw and real—in a sometimes plastic city. It’s not a fashion show but a place to be, to spend the whole evening sitting in the grass meeting all kinds of people—the scraggly, the wise and the eccentric.”
Founded by Liu Miao from Ningxia and Gao Feng from Inner Mongolia, 2 Kolegas celebrates its birth with a two-day communion of the faithful on May 28 and 29. Featured bands include Black Cat Bone, DH and the Chinese Hellcats, Buyi and Nucleus.
But it’s not just friendship and music being celebrated, it’s the realization of a five-year dream: the dream of great sound.
“When we started, we just wanted a place to stay up late, play music and listen to great music,” says Gao Feng. “All these years, we’ve been struggling and saving and thinking so hard about how to make the sound better. Just last month, we finally got a whole new system. I’m really satisfied now. It’s all about the music.”
I couldn’t agree more. After taking in several shows at 2 Kolegas in the last month, I can attest that nearly every style of music works here. The sound is warm, full and crisp, without being harsh. There’s not a bad seat in the house.
Even out in the lawn, you can hear and feel everything.
“It’s one of my favorite places to play,” says Jean-Sébastien Héry of The Amazing Insurance Salesman. “The ownership, being from Ningxia, brings the coolness of western China here. Where else in Beijing can you dance in the grass and listen to live music?”
Indeed. And where else can you talk with your barman in Chinese, English, French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese—as you can at 2 Kolegas?
A painter, photographer, videographer, honorary Zen master and faithful friend to the verbose and drunken, bartender Christophe Dorego makes “2K” a quality drinking, as well as music, destination.
“You don’t have to think here,” says Christophe. “You don’t have to be cool ... If you are drunk and want to talk, it’s part of my job to go there with you.”
That’s what 2 Kolegas is really about: the simplicity of friendship and the truth of music. If you’ve never visited, consider this your personal invitation.
