After three years in the capital, you play your farewell set on April 25. What are you going to miss most about the Beijing?
I’ll miss how laid back this scene is. Abroad, people can take themselves too seriously ... Also, Beijing is a city where people with a strong will to do things can make anything happen.
So what will we see at the farewell party?
It’s going to be a mix of all my main influences: drum ’n’ bass, reggae and dub, which are my origins in music. The reggae scene is where I come from. And then there’s dubstep, which is what I’ve been trying to do here in Beijing. You’ll find a lot of the people I’ve been performing with over the years, and Liquid Wicked is playing as well.
Tell us about Liquid Wicked.
The singer is one of my best friends ... To describe them to someone who hasn’t heard them, I’d say it’s crazy, super futuristic reggae with a dubstep twist.
What’s the most inspiring change you’ve seen in Beijing music in these three years?
It’d have to be the birth of drum ’n’ bass. When I first visited, drum ’n’ bass only happened once a month ... From there, it became a huge part of the music scene. I helped make that happen with Dan, Blackie, Hayden, Slide and D-Rail from the Syndicate.
So when will we see you back?
Soon, hopefully. I won’t be gone too long. I promise.
