Behind the Decks with DJ Usami

From the time of his arrival to Beijing in the summer of 2000 to start a residency at the infamous Club Vogue 88, Usami has been an invincible force of the Beijing party circuit, throwing at some of city's biggest events since then. "I've always been labeled a breaks DJ, but over the last couple of years I've been delving into all sorts of genres and a typical set can include breaks, electro, drum'n'bass and even a bit of tech-house and techno," the Hong Kong native admits. A peak-time legend of Yen Party fame, Usami keeps the intensity going on the dance floor no matter what he pulls out from his record bag. We picked his brain to find out what his favorites happen to be at the moment.

-- Adam Freeland, "Where Is Your God Now?": In terms of BPM it's a pretty slow tune, but still totally rocks. And to put it bluntly... dirty as f*ck! Haven't had the chance to drop it out yet, but it should be hitting Beijing's airwaves sometime this year...

-- Alex Metric, "Deadly on a Mission" (Dub): This guy has been one of my favorite producers over the last 12 months, and has been doing some pretty original stuff. The track sticks to his current sound: really fat, cut-up electro breaks. The sound quality is just amazing, and it's going to sound awesome on a big sound system...

-- Justice, "Phantom Part 2" (Boys Noize Remix): I've really been getting into the whole Justice thing this year, and just love the fatness of the kicks and bass lines in all of their tunes. "Phantom" is one of my favorite Justice tracks, and the recent Boys Noize remix keeps to the original but adds some serious fatness to it... awesome!

-- Andrew Weatherall, "Kevin 1989": This tune came out last year, but I've only recently come across it. It's very simple, but has a great rock vibe with a nice clean kick behind it. Since it's pretty fast, I've been using it as a middle track going from breaks to drum'n'bass, and it really worked a treat at the last Yen White Party in March.

-- Djuma Soundsystem, "Les Djinns" (Trentemoller Remix): Again, a pretty old track, but this has been getting some serious play time on the iPod recently. The original is really beautiful and atmospheric, but the Trentemoller mix really gives it some kick so it'll hold its own on a big floor. I can't wait to drop this in my late set at the Yen anniversary party!

Make sure to linger at Star Live on Friday, May 23rd for Usami's 3 AM set at Yen's 4th Anniversary Party.
