Behind the Decks with Mickey Zhang

DJ-cum-producer Mickey Zhang speaks softly, but man, does he carry a big stick when he's poised at those turntables. In spite of a career of seamless mixes and orginal tracks that has taken him everywhere from Berlin to Japan and back home to Beijing, where he's opened for legends such as Funk D'Void and Ken Ishii, Mickey still admits surprise that he's considered Beijing's top DJ. Neverthteless, we somehow managed to coax a few secrets of selection from Beijing's crusader of the classic Detroit techno sound.

-- Technasia, "Oxide" (Renato Cohen Remix): Very good, flowing techno with a fat bassline.

-- District One, "The Shining" (Rejected Remix): Nice remix from Joris Voorn.

-- Mickey Zhang, "CHINA": This is my newest track. A deep Chinese feeling meets electronica.

-- Jeroen Verheij, "Chica Go" (Rejected Rotterdam Rework): Detroit always sounds good.

-- Stimming & H.O.S.H., "Radar ": Very good deep house -- I like the organ!

Don't miss Mickey at Yen's Fourth Anniversary Party at Star Live on May 23, or sharing the decks with fellow O2 Culture titan Dio on June 7 for a subterranean installment of MORSE at White Rabbit.
