Behind the Decks with Patrick Yu
There are few fixtures of Beijing nightlife so iconic as Patrick Yu. From his first Beijing DJ gig at Bed Bar ("My brother, who’s a psychotherapist, used his skills of psychotherapy to talk Cho into letting me play one night. The night turned out to be one of my absolute favorites"), to a year of highlights that have placed him at the turntables with the likes of Loco Dice and D'Julz, Patrick throws the kind of soul-jacking, trouble-making house music that can keep you on the dancefloor past dawn. We talked to him to find out what treasures lurk within his record bag.
-- D’Julz, "Alpha" [Ovum]: Just a great summer track that kind of glides along with a great electric melody that tops it off.
-- Stefan Goldmann, "M Song" [Ovum]: I like these kind of tracks where vocals are used as instruments, rather than singing lyrics. This track really keeps a very light and airy feel, again great for the summer.
-- Seth Troxler & Patrick Russell, "Doctor Of Romance" [Valt Trax]: I’m a sucker for basslines, and this has a really groovy one that kind of gets stuck in your head. It has a lot of funky sounds and has a really nice little breakdown.
-- Milton Jackson, "Ghosts In My Machine" [Freerange Records]: Chords chords chords!! Such a cool track just layered thick with different moods and dimensions.
-- Nina Simone, "Here Comes The Sun" (Francois K Remix) [Legacy Recordings]: One of the most beautiful tracks I’ve heard in a really long time. Beautiful composition around this gorgeous vocal. Sex in music.
Don't miss Patrick spin for Blink Events' Sundays on Top on May 25 at Kokomo
