Beijing's top bars are flexing their mixing skills in a contest to create the capital's best "Oh My God" cocktail inspired by Usher's Billboard #1 single and in anticipation of Usher's Sunday concert at Wukesong. Readers can taste the special creations in person and vote for their favorite for a chance to win Usher tickets.
Apothecary (recently voted Beijing's bar of the year) co-founder Leon Lee introduced his bar's Usher-inspired creations to CW.
OMG - THE BLACK by Leon Lee
2 oz Valhrona cocoa nib-macerated Diplomatico Anejo rum
.5 oz black pepper syrup
.5 oz cold-brewed Shangrila Farms mocha coffee concentrate
1 fork tine chipotle en adobo
Directions: Shake and serve in cocktail glass with an orange twist.
Taste: Bitter sweetness of coffee and chocolate, with the warm spice kick of black and chipotle peppers at the end.
"We've been putting coffee in everything," says Leon of his recent foray into Louisiana-style iced coffee. "It's basically a rum old fashioned, with the addition of chocolate, coffee, and chipotle peppers," he continues. "This is the true Holy Trinity, as far as I'm concerned." Of the peppers, Leon cites his Usher inspiration: "Usher is from Texas, and he might like something with a little Tex-Mex touch."
OMG - THE WHITE by Vinson Guo, Apothecary Head Bartender
2.3 oz Smirnoff Red
1 Thai lime in wedges
.5 oz sweet vermouth
.5 oz elderflower cordial
.3 oz simple syrup
Directions: Muddle lime with liquids, add crushed ice, shake, and serve in a hurricane glass.
Taste: Floral, fragrant, incredibly refreshing and light.
Vinson aimed at a lighter version of the OMG. "This is a liberal variation on a summer drink, the caipiroska," Vinson explains. "The addition of sweet vermouth balances out the elderflower, for a light, floral summer drink."
OMG - THE LITERAL by Carl Wen, Apothecary Head Bartender
1 oz orange juice
1 oz Myers's Jamaican dark rum
1 oz Gordon's gin
2 barspoons benedictine
2 barspoons house-made grenadine
Directions: Shake, add orange twist, and serve in a cocktail glass.
Taste: Light and easy on the taste buds--perfect for non-alcoholics.
Apothecary Bartender Carl Wen went the literal route for his OMG creation and made a variation of the the Monkey Gland: O for orange juice, M for Myers' rum, and G for Gordon's gin. "We think he was lazy," jokes Leon, "but it's still a pretty clever interpretation and a light, accessible cocktail."

Holy smokes, CW - racist much? COCOA rum, BLACK pepper syrup, MOCHA concentrate, and a tine of ADOBO? Sure you don't wanna make that Aunt Jemimah Syrup, a grain of UNCLE TOM rice, and drink while watching Disney's Song of the South? Crimony. "It's basically a rum old fashioned, with the addition of chocolate, coffee, and chipotle peepers... you know... a bunch of dark stuff... cuz, you know, Usher's black."
