This past Friday night, LA-based DJ Spider crawled into Beijing to set the dancefloor ablaze at Bling. Spider is one of the hottest names right now in mash-up mayhem, and by all counts he brought it Friday. We nabbed him for a few post-gig questions.

How did you get involved in DJing and making music?

I've always loved music and grown up with it surrounding me. In high school, I would sneak out of my parents' house in the middle of the night and go to underground rave parties to see DJs and hang out with friends. Once I got to college I saved up my money and bought my first pair of turntables and joined the college radio station. I called my show "The Bassment" and myself "The Spider." From there, my passion grew for DJing and making music and took me to where I am today.

You made your name in the LA scene. How do you think that influenced your sound? China's quite a long way off from LA -- and we're not just talking geographical distance. Do you think your diverse, decadent sound has a place here in Beijing?

Los Angeles is has a very diverse and open minded club / party scene and allowed me to play many different types of music and come into my own as a DJ. As for Beijing, I came all the way out here so I wanted to give the people an idea of who I am as a DJ, representing my unique style when I'm DJ at Bling.

You're known for blending classics -- even those that some may consider far from "club-friendly" -- into up-to-the-minute dancefloor shaking beats. How do you feel using such a wide range of music and influences adds to the partygoer's experience?

Good music is good music. I like to take people all over the place in my DJ sets. Sometimes it's fun to surprise the crowd and play songs they loved but haven't heard in a long time and then bring them back in with the new club hits.

Sometimes, as trends change and time marches on, DJs "retire" to more mellow professions.Do you see yourself continuing making music for a long time to come?

I have a passion for DJing inside that will never go away but I will definitely do other things as I get older. I have been producing music, which I plan on doing more of as well as opening bars and clubs and starting various businesses. I have a lot of plans for the future and plan to fulfill them all. The sky's the limit!

You've worked and performed with quite a number of big names in the business. What have been some of your favorite experiences?

I have been so lucky in my DJing career so far and met so many amazing and inspirational people. I could go on forever about my favorite experiences. One that stands out to me was DJing at Mansion for the BPM Magazine party in Miami during Winter Music Conference before DJ AM and Mark Ronson. It was the biggest club and night I had ever done and was so nervous. My set went really well, and playing on such a huge sound system felt amazing. Being on stage and seeing both of them DJ after each other was very inspirational and one of the most fun nights of my life. It helped to get my name out there and motivate me to push my DJ career to higher levels.
