Eyewitness Report: Redeem Team at Block 8

Eleven of the 12 member of The Redeem Team, aka the gold medal winning U.S. Men’s Basketball Team, celebrated Beijing-style at an exclusive party with a tightly controlled door at Block 8’s rooftop cabana bar, The Beach on Sunday night. And City Weekend was, of course, there.

When they entered at around 1 a.m., the crowd broke into cheers and chants of “USA!” But this quickly died down as the ordinarily fashionable crowd realized they were acting like school kids. But this didn’t stop Lebron James from dancing as the line of stars made their way across the deck to their private cabanas where their handlers waited, bottles chilling.

But—then—ANOTHER surprise as none other then David Beckham showed up! Suddenly, the Redeem Team was not so important. Drawn like moths to the flame, all the women began gravitating to his corner. He was wearing a sport jacket and dapper pants, and leaned against the wall surveying the female froth around him. Even Kobe Bryant abandoned the Redeem Team perch to hang with the fellow L.A. resident.

Carmelo Anthony quickly differentiated himself as the star of the night. The guy who I think was the Redeem Team’s MVP (he played great defense, hit three-pointers and smiled the entire time) went over to Beckham’s corner to see what Kobe and Dave were getting up to. He poured himself a drink and lit up a fat cigar. After getting bored by their discussions of how to invest their millions of dollars, Carmelo then disappeared, only to re-appear moments later up top at the DJ booth!

He played selecta for a few minutes, turning the music in a harder, gangsta rap direction then got on the mike to lead a cheer, “Give it up for the GOLD MEDAL WINNING US MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM!!!!” Then he led the other members of the Redeem Team in a strange rallying cry where he would yell “Sparta” and the other 10 members responded with a guttural “Hu-wah!” He did this no less than three times!

Who knew the Redeem team was into the manga-inspired movie Sparta?

Later on, things began to get weird as members of the gold-medal winning USA women’s volleyball team started dancing on the bar, doing booty shakes that even paid dancers at ReMix would blush at.

I shook Deron Williams’ hand (though I don’t think he really cared that he and his teammates singlehandedly made this the best Olympics ever for me), I patted Dwayne Wade on the back (if he didn’t have that 40 inch vertical, he’d be in the bush league ‘cause he’s not that tall) and Lebran James walked right past me. He’s a bull, on the court and in real life. Huge, hulking, massive. A force of nature. Exactly what makes American sports the best in the world.

So you mean the woman's volleyball team gets down and dirty on the bar, and the only evidence you've got of this is Deron Williams and Jason Kidd?

Random aside: I was a translator for Jason Kidd on a commercial shoot the day after the gold medal game. He was totally out of it for the first couple hours, and now I know why . . .

None other than ERICA CHEN. I should have known. Curse you, Chen, curse you.

Hey Lee: I think you are cool also!! Can you dunk a basketball like the Dream Team? We love you because you know Latin and Mythology! Did you ask Wade if he could fly through the air like Hermes? I love you too til it hurts!

Schrader: HAHA! So you probably met my friend Ben who was also at the shoot! Ben was smart.. he got out early. Then again, he meets Kidd all the time. I, on the other hand, had to make the most of it. ;)
