Horror Business: Beijing following Shanghai's lead?

This Saturday, September 5th, Thee Miss Fits, a Wudaokou super group, featuring members of Overdose, Fanzui Xiangfa, You Mei You and Rustic, will descend upon the D-22 stage to perform a riveting set of Glenn Danzig-era Misfits classics.

Joined by ex-Samhain drummer London May, who's coming to China especially for the show, Thee Miss Fits are playing for a charity to be named later, focusing on animal relief, an idea that seems so novel I wish I'd thought of it myself. Wait . . .

While Beijing is often credited as China's leader in independent music, the home of the country's most cutting-edge rock scene, Saturday's show is in fact only the third performance on the mainland by a Misfits tribute act in the name of charity.

In October 2007, Shanghai's Horror Business, featuring members of indie/punk outfit Boys Climbing Ropes, played a pair of well-received Halloween dates in an effort to raise money for Burmese school children, an event they christened Punks for Monks. While Horror Business had no actual ties to Danzig or the Only Brothers, it appears that word of the tribute-for-charity format spread north, Thee Miss Fits going one step further by bringing May in for the show.

Conspiracy? No. Genius? Perhaps. Sweaty fist-pumping madness? Guaranteed.

In other punk rawk news, Los Angeles hardcore outfit Urban Decay kick off their China tour on Friday, September 4th at 2 Kolegas, and upstart label DM Records, home to Nanjing's Angry Jerks, The Flyx and Cold Case, will be hosting a launch party at D-22 on October 2nd.

notice of disclosure: I was involved with the aforementioned Horror Business and Punks for Monks and commend Thee Miss Fits for rocking out for a good cause.
