Bartenders have just come out with their winter drink lists. We searched out the best.
Charlemagne: This Maison Boulud cocktail combines warmed hard cider with Calvados (an apple brandy liquor) topped with whipped cream. The Charlemagne (¥75) is the perfect after dinner warm-up.
Find it: Maison Boulud, 23 Qianmen Dongdajie, Tel: 6559-9200
Q Blazer: If you want to watch blue flames flow into a cup and then drink it, opt for Q Bar’s self-titled Q Blazer (¥60), a combo of whiskey, Galliano, sugar, Peychaud’s orange bitters, boiling water and a fresh orange peel. This take on the Blue Blazer is the brainchild of mixologist Jerry Thomas.
Find it: Q Bar, 6/F Eastern Hotel, Tel: 6595-9239
Hot Buttered Rum: An Apothecary favorite, the hot buttered rum (¥60) is made of egg, butter, spices, sugar, fruit peels and more. The base takes 24 hours to prepare and is topped with hot water and Goslings Black Seal rum for a frothy, creamy concoction that will warm you to the core.
Find it: Apothecary, 3/F Nali Patio, 81 Sanlitun North, Tel: 5208-6040
Hot Apple Pie: Made with Jameson whiskey, Apple Puckey, cinnamon, honey and hot water, the Hot Apple Pie (¥45) at 12SQM Bar is more dessert than brew. It will keep you warm and get you buzzed without the creaminess of most warm drinks.
Find it: 12SQM, 1 Fuxiang Hutong, Tel: 6402-1554
Warm-Hearted Englishman: With gin, home-made apple syrup, fresh lemon and passionfruit mixed with hot water, this ¥60 brew is ideal for, well, the English. This warm cocktail at Flamme is served with fresh passionfruit and takes the cake for creative winter cocktails.
Find it: Flamme, 3/F, S4-33 Sanlitun Village, Tel: 6417-8608
French Toast: This marriage of Advocaat, warm milk, rum, cinnamon and honey tastes just like its delicious namesake. At ¥45, this sweet treat from Mao Mao Chong is a wintertime favorite.
Find it: Mao Mao Chong, 12 Banchang Hutong, Tel: 6405-5718
Navegado: This Chilean version of spiced mulled wine (¥58) is made in two stages at Terra. First, red wine is warmed with cinnamon, cloves, star anise, oranges, lemons and honey. Before serving, brandy is added with amaretto and pressed lemon adding extra taste.
Find it: Terra, 1 Sanlitun Nanlu, Tel: 6591-9148
Hot Chocolate: The able bartenders at Mohiki include Myer’s dark rum, house-made chocolate sauce, steamed milk and coco powder in a cappuccino cup. This ¥60 concoction also comes with a baguette slice to dip into the chocolate sauce.
Find it: Mokihi, 3/F, C12 Lucky Street, Tel: 5867-0244
Hot Baked Apple Toddy: This ain’t your father’s hot toddy—it’s better. The alchemists at Twilight bake a slice of apple in brown sugar and cinammon, then stuff it with cloves and sink it in a steaming cup of Glenfiddich Single Malt with a dash of lemon juice. At ¥60, this is a winter comfort you can’t afford to miss.
Find it: Twilight, 3/F, Bldg 5, Jianwai SOHO, Tel: 5900-5376
Mulled Wine: Salud may not have the fanciest cocktails, but for ¥40 their mulled wine will warm you up. Made with wine, cloves, orange, spices and a bit of spirit, it packs a fruity punch.
Find it: Salud, 66 Nanluoguxiang, Tel: 6402-5086
